The NIE Explained: The Essential First Step to Spain

Before you can buy a home, open a bank account, sign utilities, or even finalize your residency in Spain, you need one essential document: the NIE — Número de Identificación de Extranjero.
Think of it as your Spanish ID number. Without it, nothing moves forward.

2. In Spain at an Immigration Office (Extranjería)

A valid option, but appointments are limited and can be difficult to secure. Processing times are also less predictable.

Both routes require forms, fees, identification, and proof of purpose — such as purchasing a property or preparing for residency.
